Instructional Technology Practicum Week 7 - Gradescope and iClicker

This week, our team began reviewing Gradescope and met with iClicker representatives. I reviewed and studied Gradescope and created a playlist of tutorial videos. They were prepared them in an easily accessible playlist where we could access them quickly and as needed for faculty members.

Grading a simple question 
This video shows the basics of grading with Gradescope. You'll see how to: 
  • Navigate through submissions for one question. 
  • Make rubric items. 
  • Change rubric point values. 


Grading even faster with keyboard shortcuts 

In our shortest video, you'll learn how to use keyboard shortcuts to grade even more quickly. We also have a handy image for reference. 


Advanced Grading Options  

Gradescope allows for flexibility in grading. 
  • Grading can be additive or subtractive. 
  • Rubrics can have lower and upper bounds. 
  • Multiple people can grade the same question in parallel. 
  • Point adjustments can be made for individual students, with optional comments. 


Annotation and advanced navigation 

Gradescope allows free-hand annotation of student submissions. With Gradescope Complete, you can also type text directly on the submission. And even though by default you see only the question area, it's simple to see the rest of the page, as well as other pages. 


AI-assisted grading 

For fixed-template assignments, we have two features that can help speed up grading even more: 
  • Answer Groups (for all question types): the ability to form and grade answer groups, instead of individual student answers. 
  • AI Assistance (for some question types): Gradescope's AI automatically forms suggested answer groups for your review. 


Manage course roster 

Adding course staff and importing a large number of students is simple to do in Gradescope. Here's the sample roster used in the video. 


Create an exam 

This video shows how to upload your exam template and create the question outline. Here's the sample template used in the video. 


Create a homework assignment 

This video shows you how to enable your students to submit their work to Gradescope and how to create the question outline. Gradescope supports both fixed-length (worksheet style) and variable-length (problem sets, projects) student-uploaded assignments. Here's the sample template used in this video. 

Create a bubble sheet assignment 
With bubble sheet assignments, you can define the correct answers using an answer key. Gradescope can then grade the students’ multiple choice responses automatically. 
Create a group assignment 
This video shows you how to create an assignment meant to be completed by a group of students. You will see how both instructors and students set up their group submissions. 
LMS Integration 
Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, Sakai, and Moodle integrations are available with an institutional license. This video shows you how to link your Canvas course, roster, and assignment to Gradescope, and how to export grades to Canvas. You can follow the same steps to sync with Blackboard, Brightspace, Sakai, or Moodle. 
For Students: submitting homework 
This video shows how to submit a variable length assignment (i.e. a homework with no fixed page number) as a student. 
Having a high quality scan is an important step in submitting assignments. Our guide for students goes over the entire process of getting a good scan. 

Scan Exams 
Scanning exams, demonstrated on the ScanSnap ix500 (this is an Amazon affiliate link). Take a look at our favorite settings for this model. 
Upload exam scans and associate with students 
After the exams are scanned in, they can be uploaded in batches. We'll attempt to automatically split the scanned pages into submissions. We will then automatically attempt to match each submission to a student in your roster, and you'll be able to manually match any remaining submissions. You can download the two batches used in this video: first and second. 
Publish grades 
After grading is complete, all data can be downloaded from Gradescope in CSV format. Conveniently, students can be notified of the availability of their graded assignment via Gradescope via email and can review their scores online. If you'd like to disable regrade requests for an assignment, you can do so from the Regrade Requests page. 
Manage regrade requests 
Once grades have been released, students have the option to submit regrade requests. Gradescope allows instructors to easily change students' grades and submit responses to the requests. 
View assignment statistics 
Once grading is complete for an assignment, you can go to the Assignment Statistics page to get further insights into what your students have learned and where they are potentially struggling. You can view statistics at the assignment level or at the question/rubric item level, and you can also tag questions with concepts, learning objectives, book chapters, etc., and then view statistics by tag.

Instructional Technology Practicum Week 5 - Poll Everywhere Live Training, Dynamic Syllabus Training

This week, I will be working with Jerad Watson and Tyler Weldon in the completion of several live training sessions. I observed several trainings on the Poll Everywhere app. This app is used by UAB Faculty in many ways. Poll Everywhere is detailed on the UAB eLearning website as:

"Poll Everywhere is a web-based audience response system that lets you embed interactive activities such as polls, questions, and competitions into presentations. On the surface, Poll Everywhere is a simple application that works well for live audiences using mobile devices like phones. People participate by visiting a fast mobile-friendly web page/app or sending text messages. Instructions are displayed on-screen. The poll that is embedded within the presentation or web page will update in real time."


Instructional Technology Practicum Week 6 - Canvas Dynamic Syllabus and TurnItIn

Homecoming Week! This week I have begun working on my first faculty training session coming up in November. I will be creating the training session for Canvas Mobile Apps. The Canvas LMS has an app that is available for students and faculty on the go. I will be downloading and testing each application and how it works. I will also be troubleshooting, taking notes, and researching potential issues that have happened with the apps and how to address them.

Canvas Alerts is an initiative created by UAB and is not a part of the Canvas LMS.

I have also begun creating guides this week for UAB's Dynamic Syllabus and for TurnItIn, which is an app that is integrated with Canvas and detects plagiarism. I will also be working on creating instructional videos for each technology.

Instructional Technology Practicum Week 4 - ServiceNow Production

During the past few weeks at work, I've worked with our Canvas Administrator, Tyler Weldon, on completing faculty course requests in the ServiceNOW ticket system. Detailed below is a report of my work in Canvas. This week, I primarily worked in Canvas while I trained with UAB's Instructional Technologist, Jared Watson in learning more about UAB's academic technologies. Primarily, I was adding users like Teaching Assistants, Course Designers, and Co-Instructors in the Banner Interface or in Canvas directly.

FINAL ARTIFACT Instructional Technology Report 1 and 2 - RLDB and Respondus Monitor Live Training Session - Includes Peer Review/Critique

Professional Development Report (1 and 2)

Part 1

Modification: As a new member of the instructional technology team at UAB, no needs assessment was conducted. We recently adopted a new technology, Respondus Monitor, which is an additional product for a current technology we use, LockDown Browser. I was assigned this training for our department staff and faculty members.

Preliminary Work: Preliminary work consisted of testing LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor. I also researched guides and videos on the Respondus Monitor website and created some guides of my own for UAB's website. The InTech team at UAB also attended an online training session with Arie Sowers, one of the brand's trainers for LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor. Upon gathering the information, I created a PowerPoint presentation, took notes, and prepared and practiced my material and was ready to present to the division. The training session lasted roughly an hour and consisted of a PowerPoint Presentation accompanied by live demos.

Instructional Technology Practicum Fall 2019 Week 3 - Respondus Monitor Training Overview

My supervisors have assigned me to train faculty and staff about how to use LockDown Browser and Respondus Montior. This is a new technology that has recently been integrated into UAB's technology resources for their learning management system, Canvas. We did not use surveys or needs assessment strategies, as training is needed for new technology.
